Boat Maintenance Checklist: Before Trips and Each Season

Before a trip, check that the boat can keep water out, remove water that gets in, steer reliably, and run without an unresolved fault. Then confirm your safety equipment and trip plan. Washing and polishing can wait until those basics are covered.

This checklist is an owner inspection routine for recreational boats. Use the rows that match your boat; the monthly and seasonal rounds below are practical planning suggestions. Engine and component replacements keep their own service intervals.

Before every trip: the boat maintenance checklist

Do the hands-on checks with engines stopped, ignition secured, and hot components allowed to cool. Save the running checks for after the engine space is clear.

Hull openings and hosesCheck accessible intake hoses, strainers, clamps, shaft-seal areas, and drain plugs where fitted. Look for wet joints, salt trails, chafe, and damaged hardware. Confirm intakes are set correctly before running.
Steering and controlsCheck that steering responds smoothly and controls operate as intended. Investigate binding, excessive play, hydraulic leakage, or unreliable shifting before departure.
Engine fluids and fuelCheck the specified oil, coolant, and gear-oil levels using the correct procedures. Confirm fuel for the trip and reserve. Look for leaks at fuel lines and separators.
Batteries and electrical equipmentCheck battery security, visible cable condition, and connections. Verify the starting/house systems, navigation lights, horn, and communications equipment you need for the trip.
Deck gear and safety equipmentInspect dock lines, cleats, anchor gear, and accessible boarding arrangements. Have suitable life jackets for everyone and check the condition/readiness of extinguishers, distress equipment, and alarms.
After startingCheck normal oil pressure, temperature, cooling indications, charging, and sound. Investigate alarms, new leaks, overheating, or a loss of normal cooling flow before leaving.

Before casting off, check the marine forecast, brief the crew, and leave your route and expected return time with someone ashore. A sunny marina is not a forecast for the crossing or the return trip. Test the bilge system, not just the dashboard switch

Switching a pump on at the helm tells you whether its manual circuit works. It does not prove that a float switch or electronic sensor will activate it while you are away.

Use the installed pump and sensor's test method. Where a water test is appropriate, use clean water in a clean bilge, watch the automatic activation, and confirm discharge overboard and normal shutoff. Avoid prolonged dry running. If the bilge contains fuel or oil, arrange containment and cleanup instead of pumping contamination into the harbor.

Remove loose debris that could jam the float or pump inlet. Check accessible discharge hoses for kinks, splits, and loose connections. If fitted, test the high-water alarm separately.

Also establish which battery circuit powers automatic pumping when the boat is left at the dock. Do not assume that switching the battery selector off leaves the automatic circuit energized.

A working pump is not a repair for a leak. BoatUS's preventative-maintenance guidance emphasizes finding the water's source; a pump can hide a developing problem until it clogs or the battery runs down.

Look for leaks and deterioration while they are still small

Trace a hose to both ends. A shiny section in the middle does not tell you whether the concealed end is rubbing on a bracket or leaking at a fitting.

Useful clues include fresh salt crystals at a seawater connection, green or pink corrosion on metal fittings, rusted clamps, cracking at a hose bend, and a new wet patch under equipment. Investigate the source rather than repeatedly wiping the evidence away.

Know where the seacocks are and how to reach them. Isolate a below-waterline intake before opening its strainer, then restore the system and check for leaks before operating the equipment. Do not force a seized or badly corroded valve while afloat.

Compare shaft-seal leakage with the requirements for that installation. A traditional packing gland can have a specified drip rate; a different seal may be intended to run dry. New or increasing leakage needs investigation.

For gasoline inboards and sterndrives, complete the specified ventilation/blower procedure before starting. Fuel odor or a visible fuel leak means stop: do not start the engine, keep ignition sources away, and have the cause corrected.

After every trip

An end-of-trip round makes the next departure easier:

  • Look again for leaks. A connection can stay dry at rest and leak after the engine reaches operating temperature.
  • Record each engine's hours and any symptoms. Note the engine, conditions, and observation: "Port temperature rose under load" is useful; "engine weird" is not.
  • Rinse salt and flush where required. Use the engine's correct flushing connection and engine state. Some built-in flushing ports require the engine to remain stopped.
  • Clear cockpit drains and scuppers. Remove debris that could trap rainwater after you leave.
  • Secure the boat for the berth and forecast. Check lines, chafe protection, fenders, hatches, and the battery/automatic-pump arrangement.

If you use a pressurized dock-water connection, shut it off when leaving the boat unattended. A failed onboard hose can otherwise have a continuous water supply. Follow your installation's shore-power connection and disconnection procedure, and have damaged or heat-discolored plugs addressed.

A monthly inspection round while the boat is in use

Choose a regular day for a closer inspection, especially if the boat stays in the water. Check sooner after storms, a grounding, a hard docking, new vibration, or another unusual event.

Hoses, valves, and drains: inspect beyond the easily visible sections. Check hose supports, drain paths, and accessible hull fittings. Exercise sound seacocks as directed for the installation and restore their correct operating positions. Stiff or suspect valves become repair items.

Batteries and cables: look for looseness, corrosion, damaged insulation, and overheating. Check serviceable flooded-battery electrolyte only if that battery type calls for it. AGM, gel, and lithium batteries are not serviced by adding water.

Anodes and underwater gear: inspect accessible anodes and arrange underwater inspection appropriate to the boat. Replace anodes at their specified wear limit; do not paint them. Rapid loss deserves investigation of bonding/electrical conditions as well as replacement. Fouling, propeller damage, and line around a shaft can need attention before the next haulout.

Lines and attachment points: feel and look for chafe, hard spots, cut fibers, loose cleats, and damaged backing or surrounding structure. A line that still looks clean can be damaged where it passes through a chock.

Safety equipment: inspect life jackets, follow inflatable-jacket service instructions, check extinguisher condition and applicable replacement dates, and test installed smoke/CO alarms as directed. Check expiry dates and battery/service status on the distress equipment you carry.

Keep the rounds small enough to do. The useful output is a specific finding and next action, not a long list of identical "inspect boat" reminders.

At the start of the season or before a longer trip

Review the service records before buying a generic annual-service kit. Identify which jobs are due by hours, calendar time, or another stated limit. Low annual engine use does not remove calendar deadlines.

After major service or a long layup, make time for a controlled local shakedown before committing to an offshore passage. Check for leaks and normal operation under appropriate load, then recheck after shutdown.

What should stop a trip, and what can be scheduled?

Resolve before departure: fuel leaks or persistent fuel odor, unexplained water ingress, an unreliable bilge system, steering/control defects, overheating, unresolved critical alarms, or missing/unserviceable safety equipment required for the trip. If the boat is already taking water or has a fire, respond to the emergency and call for help rather than continuing a checklist.

Resolve before leaving the boat unattended: an automatic pump that fails its test, insecure dock lines or cleats, a shore-power fault, or a leak that depends on someone being aboard to manage it.

Plan around the next due point: routine service approaching its hour/date limit, bottom cleaning, and equipment wear that has been assessed as serviceable until the planned work. Advance the job if the next trip will cross its limit.

Fit around those priorities: routine polishing, upholstery cleaning, and other cosmetic work. Suspected structural damage is not a cosmetic task.

An inspection finding becomes more useful when it names the equipment and the problem: "Aft bilge pump runs manually but float switch does not activate it—repair and retest before departure." Keep the finding open until the repair and successful check are recorded.

Seasonal care for year-round boaters

In Southern California, the season may change without the boat going into storage. Keep the calendar services, check storm chafe and drains, inspect anodes, and watch for leaks and corrosion during quieter months.

If the boat will be stored where freezing is possible, prepare the engine, raw-water circuits, potable-water system, sanitation, and other water-containing equipment using their winterizing procedures. Running one engine briefly or treating the fuel does not winterize the rest of the boat.
